Warning regarding possible supply of non-compliant reinforcing steel.
It has come to our attention that there is the possibility of non-compliant steel reinforcing bars being imported into the country. As a result the UK Certification Authority for Reinforcing Steels (CARES) has increased the frequency of its inspections with respect to this issue.
To date CARES have advised that they have found no evidence of reinforcing bar non-compliant to British Standard BS4449 coming from any CARES approved mill.
CARES approved fabricators should have procedures in place to deal with bundles of steel that have illegible, torn, suspect or missing labels.
In view of the above we would advise that you ensure your reinforcement supplier is CARES approved and is aware of the above potential issue and has procedures in place giving full traceability of the reinforcing bar they are supplying to you.
